IFA 2010: Musik zum Anfassen und Bilder sortieren leicht gemacht
Mit klingenden Exponaten präsentiert sich das Fraunhofer-Institut für Digitale Medientechnologie IDMT in diesem Jahr auf der IFA 2010 in Berlin. Neben einem Telefonkommunikationssystem für schwerhörende Menschen und einer Software zur Organisation von digitalen Fotoarchiven stehen das Musizieren und außergewöhnliche Klangerlebnisse im Mittelpunkt.

Stress resilience returns with feeling for rhythm
If your body releases cortisol with fixed regularity then you can cope with stress better, says NWO-funded researcher Angela Sarabdjitsingh. She investigated the rhythm of corticosterone production in rats. This rat hormone is comparable to the human stress hormone cortisol. An irregular release pattern is a characteristic of chronic stress and stress-related diseases. It might therefore be possible to treat these by restoring the rhythm.

Auditory Cortex Tracks Both Auditory and Visual Stimulus Dynamics Using Low-Frequency Neuronal Phase
Integrating information across sensory domains to construct a unified representation of multi-sensory signals is a fundamental characteristic of perception in ecological contexts. One provocative hypothesis deriving from neurophysiology suggests that there exists early and direct cross-modal phase modulation. We provide evidence, based on magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings from participants viewing audiovisual movies, that low-frequency neuronal information lies at the basis of the synergistic coordination of information across auditory and visual streams.

Short-term meditation induces white matter changes in the anterior cingulate
In previous studies we showed that 3 h of mental training, based on traditional Chinese medicine (integrative body–mind training, IBMT), increases ACC activity and improves self-regulation. We here report that 11 h of IBMT increases fractional anisotropy (FA), an index indicating the integrity and efficiency of white matter in the corona radiata, an important white-matter tract connecting the ACC to other structures.

Mit einer auf den ersten Blick ungewöhnlichen Methode wollen Forscher entschlüsseln, welche Farben alte Meister für ihre Gemälde eingesetzt haben: Pigmente machen sich in einem gewissen Rahmen geräuschvoll bemerkbar, wenn Licht auf sie fällt – und die Fotoakustische Infrarotspektroskopie übersetzt sie für Forscher in wahrnehmbare Signale.

Application of Photoacoustic Infrared Spectroscopy in the Forensic Analysis of Artists’ Inorganic Pigments
Fourier-transform photoacoustic infrared (PAIR) spectroscopy has been used in the analysis of twelve inorganic pigments commonly in use by artists today, viz., cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, Prussian blue, azurite, malachite, chromium oxide, viridian, cadmium yellow, chrome yellow, iron oxide, yellow ochre and Mars orange. The authenticity of these twelve commercial pigments was first established by recording their Raman spectra. The subsequent PAIR spectra were highly reproducible and matched well in the mid-IR region with previously published data for these pigments. A number of additional overtone and combination bands were also detected that will prove useful in the identification of the pigments in the future.

Vom 21. bis 25. September treffen sich in Mannheim mehr als 6000 Mediziner aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum zur Neurowoche 2010. Fünf Fachdisziplinen (Neurologen und Kinderneurologen, Neurochirurgen, Neuroradiologen und Neuropathologen) sind auf der Neurowoche versammelt. Ihr Themenspektrum reicht von Alzheimer bis Schlaganfall, von Epilepsien bis Multiple Sklerose, von Demenz bis Gehirntumoren oder von Prionenforschung bis zum Einsatz von "Botox" in der Neurologie.

The evolution of the highest-order human brain center, the “pallium” or “cortex,” remains enigmatic. To elucidate its origins, we set out to identify related brain parts in phylogenetically distant animals, to then unravel common aspects in cellular composition and molecular architecture. Here, we compare vertebrate pallium development to that of the mushroom bodies, sensory-associative brain centers, in an annelid.
